Malcolm Young of AC/DC was a master rhythm player! Not only that, he’s the guy who came up with their greatest riffs, NOT (as many people think) his younger brother Angus.

Which reminds me of a problem the guitar world faces these days…

When you look at a band like AC/DC, Angus Young was always up front getting all the attention as the lead guitarist, while Malcolm would stand at the back rooted in position laying down the rhythm part.

That kind of setup has led to a very common misconception that playing lead solos is “the cool part” of playing guitar, so that’s what most people gravitate towards.

A great rhythm guitarist needs to lock in with what the bass and drums are doing. The drums provide the pace, the bass provides the low end of the groove and the rhythm guitar completes the picture on the top end.

If the drums and bass are setting up the groove, the rhythm guitar is the icing on the cake. It’s a key part of “the engine room” of a song.

The practice resumed, and everybody was finally on the same page.

The key is to lock in with the drummer and bass player by “playing drums” with your right hand.

I once heard Cliff Williams (AC/DC's bass player) describe how he and Malcolm Young would fit in with the groove - if you think of a drum as making a ‘POP’ noise, he was aiming to play on the ‘O’.
